Terms of use

These terms apply to englishbystory.com ("English by Story", "we", "us"). By creating an account or buying Premium you agree to them. Questions: hello@englishbystory.com.

1. Your account

You sign in with your email address and a code we send you. Keep access to your email safe. One account is for one person. You can delete your account at any time on your Account page.

2. Free stories

A free account lets you read the free stories (all Beginner A1 stories and the first story of every other level) and use the level test. We may change which stories are free.

3. Premium subscription

• Plans. Premium is sold as a monthly plan ($6.99 a month) or a yearly plan ($62.99 a year). Prices are shown before you pay and include tax where tax applies. Your bank may show the amount in your local currency.
• Automatic renewal. Your plan renews automatically at the end of each period (each month or each year) and the payment card on file is charged the then-current price, until you cancel. For yearly plans we send a reminder email before the renewal.
• Cancel any time. You can cancel on your Account page at any time. Cancelling stops the next renewal. You keep Premium until the end of the period you have already paid for; then your account returns to the free stories. Your progress is kept.
• No refunds. All payments are final. We do not give refunds or credits for any charge, including partly used periods, unused time, or a renewal you forgot to cancel.
• Immediate access. Premium is digital content that starts as soon as you pay. When you buy, you ask for access to start immediately and you agree that, once access starts, you lose any legal right to cancel the purchase and get a refund within a cooling-off period (for example the 14-day right of withdrawal in the EU and the UK).
• Failed payments. If a renewal payment fails, Premium stays open for 3 days while we try the card again. If the payment still fails, Premium closes until the card is updated.
• Changing plans. You can switch between monthly and yearly on your Account page. The change starts at once and Stripe adjusts the amount for the time already paid.
• Price changes. If we change the price, we tell you by email before your next renewal. The new price applies from that renewal. You can cancel before it.
• Chargebacks. If you dispute a payment with your bank, Premium stops while the dispute is open.

4. Payments

Payments are processed by Stripe. We never see or store your full card number. When Stripe Managed Payments is used, Stripe sells the subscription to you as the merchant of record, and Stripe's own terms also apply to the payment.

5. Codes

A Premium code gives Premium for the number of days stated. Codes have no cash value and cannot be exchanged for money.

6. Using the stories

The stories, recordings, exercises and design are for your own personal learning. Please do not copy, download, share, sell or publish them, and do not share your account. We may close accounts that break these rules.

7. New stories

We plan to add more stories.

8. Our service

We work to keep the site running and correct, but we provide it "as is". We are not responsible for losses caused by the site being unavailable, as far as the law allows. Nothing in these terms limits rights you have under the consumer law of your country that cannot be limited.

9. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms. If a change matters for paying members, we tell you by email before it applies.
